This week, a US judge approved a $15bn (£12bn) settlement that has forced the company to compensate affected VW drivers, with the result that each owner will receive between $5,000 and $10,000 (£4,000 and £8,000) depending on the age of their vehicle.

It is in stark contrast to what’s happening in the UK, where VW has so far refused goodwill payments, and the government has been accused by MPs of failing to tackle the company.

However, having offered compensation and vehicle buybacks to US car owners caught up in the emissions affair, VW is strongly resisting calls by the European Commission and some other EU politicians for similar steps in Europe. And differences between US and EU legal systems mean the company is unlikely in Europe to face anything like the $21bn of scandal-related expenses it has run up in North America.

VW has now set aside a total of 22.6bn euros for fines, fixing or buying back affected vehicles and compensating owners.
Some 600,000 vehicles in the US were affected and last month the firm agreed to plead guilty to criminal charges.
But no compensation has been offered to the millions of UK or European drivers affected - much to the anger of politicians and regulators there.

VW wypłaci odszkodowania Amerykanom, zaś Europejczykom nie. Widać kto jest dla VW klientem pierwszej, a kto drugiej kategorii.

Mam nadzieję, że w przyszłości sami konsumenci ich ukarzą, wybierając produkty konkurencji.

Ciekawi mnie też na czym polega słabość europejskiego prawa, które nie potrafi wyegzekwować tego samego co prawo amerykańskie. Moja teoria spiskowa jest taka, że Niemcy sterując UE dopilnują, żeby w Europie nic się ich ukochanemu koncernowi nie stało. Kosztem klientów oczywiście.
