Rząd w Kijowie kupi w USA prawdopodobnie 210 pocisków przeciwczołgowych typu Javelin i 35 wyrzutni tego samego systemu, donosi stacja ABC. Zapłaci za to 47 mln dolarów. Ukraina próbowała pozyskać te rakiety od czasu ataku sił wspieranych przez Rosję na swoje wschodnie granice.

Stany Zjednoczone zdecydowały się dostarczyć Ukrainie zaawansowane środki obronne.

"To element naszej polityki pomagania temu państwu w tworzeniu systemu obronnego, wzmacnianiu jego zdolności do utrzymania bezpieczeństwa w granicach i odparciu dalszej agresji" - stwierdziła rzeczniczka Departamentu Stanu, Heather Nauert.

The president and Congress must approve the sale of anti-tank missiles. The Javelin, a portable missile with a steep price-tag, has been described as "The American Military's Anti-Tank Killer."

If Trump approves the arms deal, it would be a major shift from the party platform on sending lethal weapons to Ukraine, which was amended when Trump was the party's nominee for president, from supporting "lethal defensive arms" to Ukraine to the more vague "appropriate assistance” -- language that ran counter to the perspective of many of the organization’s Republicans.

Russian officials have said the US decision to supply weapons to Ukraine will fuel conflict in the east of the country.

The US state department said on Friday that it would provide Ukraine with “enhanced defensive capabilities” as it continued to fight Russia-backed separatists in a low-intensity conflict.
Until now, the US has only provided Ukraine with support equipment and training. It has also allowed private companies to sell small arms such as rifles to the country.

But it is understood that arms such as the US-made Javelin anti-tank missiles can now be delivered to Ukraine. This was unconfirmed by the state department, however.
 
Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Grigory Karasin, told Russian state media that the US decision “raises the danger of derailing the process of peaceful settlement in Ukraine”.
